How do I import images into NextGEN Gallery?

Importing Images into NextGEN Gallery

As of version 2.0.0 the basic functionality of importing images into NextGEN Gallery has changed. The following will help to explain how images are imported into NextGEN Gallery now as well as how to add new images to these imported galleries.

First off, you are able to set your default gallery path in NextGEN Gallery via Gallery > Other Options > Image Options. This is important as it is part of the path used when importing images into NextGEN Gallery. The default path is `/wp-content/gallery/` which means that any imported images will go into a folder that will be created underneath the `gallery` folder.

All images imported using NextGEN Gallery 2.0.0 or greater are now copied from the original folder into a new gallery folder as noted above. This is important if you want to use a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client to add more images to that gallery folder to later be “scanned” into the gallery via the Gallery > Manage Galleries … (choose the gallery to modify) … and click the <Scan Folder for new images> button.

In NextGEN Legacy versions (1.19.13 and earlier) the imported folder served the images for NextGEN Gallery to use, that is no longer the case with NextGEN Gallery in its current versions, you must now add new images to the folder found in the NextGEN Gallery storage folder structures.

Let’s look at an example:

  • You have a folder on your server that is located on the same level as the `/wp-content/` folder and you want to import its images. For security reasons you can no longer import from folders found outside of the `/wp-content/` folder.

  • Using FTP you move this folder to within the `/wp-content/’ folder and name it `my-beautiful-images`; you can now navigation to this folder via Gallery > Add Gallery / Images … click on the Import Folder according tab.

    • This will open the panel and show all folders found under `/wp-content/` … navigate to the folder you wish to import and click the <Import Gallery> button. This will not import sub-folders; you will need to import each of those separately.

    • Using our example folder name from above and the default gallery path will create a new gallery folder `/wp-content/gallery/my-beautiful-images/`

    • If you want to add more images to this gallery, you can simply use the Gallery > Add Gallery / Images interface and choose this gallery then add the image files like any other standard upload with NextGEN Gallery.

    • If you want to FTP more images into the `my-beautiful-images` gallery you will need to FTP them into the appropriate NextGEN Gallery folder then use the <Scan Folder for new images> button.

      • To find the correct path to the appropriate folder go to Gallery > Manage Galleries … click on the gallery you want to investigate and look at the value shown in the “Path:” text field.

      • Remember, you can change the default path under Gallery > Other Options > Image Options but this will not affect the existing NextGEN Gallery storage folder structures.
